IPL 2022: Match 1, CSK vs KKR Match Prediction – Who will win today’s IPL match between CSK vs KKR
Preview
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener this year and this will be a repeat of the last year’s final. CSK ended up on the winning side in the previous meeting and KKR will be seeking revenge for losing out in the final last year. Both teams have been slightly affected by their overseas players arriving late and CSK will not have their services of Moeen Ali for the first game. However, the big news is the legendary MS Dhoni stepping down captaincy and has handed over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja for the season
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders do have some interesting options on the bench but have been slightly affected with Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch arriving late as well. The two-time winners will look up to their new skipper Shreyas Iyer to do the magic, while a lot of familiar faces have come back into the squad. It is expected to be a heavy weight clash between the two teams who have some match-winners in their squad.

Probable best batter of the Match: Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer has been in the form of his life at the moment and he will return to his favourite number three position, where he has been the most effective. The right-hander can switch gears by playing the anchor role at times and can hit some lusty blows, if needed, as well. The KKR skipper is likely to make the most out of this edition going by the form he has been in and he can be a match-winner for the franchise.
Probable best bowler of the Match: Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine bowled splendidly in the recently concluded CPL as well as in the BPL and excelled with both bat and ball. The mystery spinner has been associated with the franchise for a long time now and he can definitely be the X factor with the ball. The 33-year-old can turn around games on his own and he will be a handy batter down the order. Narine was one of the reasons behind KKR’s comeback in the previous edition of the IPL.

Here’s a look at the 3 players to watch out for from Lucknow Super Giants Team:
1. KL Rahul: The former Punjab Kings player and the current captain of Lucknow Super Giants will play a huge role in getting the new IPL team a good start in their maiden tournament. It can easily boil down to the manner in which Rahul leads from the front with the bat and in the leadership role. Rahul’s team selection and field placement decisions will have a big bearing on how the team fares during the season.
2. Marcus Stoinis: The Australian all-rounder has been in tremendous form in the last few seasons of the Big Bash League and for the Australian cricket team in their title-winning T20 World Cup 2021. Stoinis can provide Rahul with options at the top of the batting line-up as well as with the ball.
3. Ravi Bishnoi: Bishnoi’s stint with the senior Indian team would have given him immense confidence as he embarks on a new IPL journey with Lucknow. So far, Bishnoi has played 23 matches and taken 24 wickets in IPL.
Here are 3 players to watch out for from Gujarat Titans Team:
1. Hardik Pandya: Captain Hardik will surely cherish the opportunity to lead the new Gujarat franchise as he also looks to reclaim the all-rounder’s spot in the Indian senior cricket team. Hardik has been sidelined due to his back problems and his inability to bowl regularly and at full fitness, which has been a big cause of worry. However, with the captaincy role, much is expected from the former Mumbai Indians all-rounder.
2. Shubman Gill: IPL 2022 can prove to be a huge turning point in Gill’s career as he looks to take up more responsibility in the new team. So far, Gill has played 58 IPL matches, scoring 1,417 runs at an average of 31.49.
3. Rashid Khan: Rashid’s presence in the squad can easily improve the dynamics of the bowling arsenal of any side. And considering Gujarat’s strong bowling unit, Rashid will surely cause problems to even the best batters in the world. In IPL cricket, Rashid has taken 93 wickets in 76 games at an average of 20.56.
IPL 2021: Turning point of the final between CSK and KKR
So, it is the lions from Chennai who have roared their way to their 4th IPL crown. The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the summit clash of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by 27 runs to emerge as the champions of the 14th IPL edition.
Batting first, the ‘Men in Yellow’ piled up a colossal total of 192/3, with Faf du Plessis leading the way. The South African right-hander scored a classy 59-ball 86 at the top of the order. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa chipped in with 32 and 31 respectively, while Moeen Ali applied the finishing touches, and scored a quickfire 20-ball 37*.
In reply, the KKR openers gave an excellent start to their side. Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill put on a blazing partnership of 91 runs and sent the CSK side on a leather hunt. But then, Iyer’s departure in the 11th over of the match completely swung the momentum in CSK’s favour, and that is also the turning point of the 2021 IPL final.
Ravindra Jadeja’s catch to dismiss Venkatesh Iyer
Surely, when Venkatesh Iyer was going all guns blazing, and till the left-hander was out in the middle, the CSK fans would have not been comfortable. Iyer scored a blistering 50 off just 32 deliveries to set the tone for the chase.
But then, his innings came to an end in the 11th over of the KKR innings. Shardul Thakur bowled a delivery outside off stump, Iyer went for an expansive drive and the ball went miles in the air.
Iyer had got the height, but he had not got the distance, and the ball went in the direction of deep cover. Ravindra Jadeja, who was stationed there, kept his eyes on the ball like a hawk, ran towards his left, and completed a sensational catch. Iyer departed, and with his dismissal, the hopes of the KKR fans went up in smoke as well. And from 91/0, the KKR side ended up with a total of 165/9.
Apart from that, Jadeja also completed another good catch to dismiss Sunil Narine. Off the second ball he faced, Narine went for the pull, and the ball travelled towards deep mid-wicket. And Jadeja, who is as safe as a house, pouched another excellent catch in the deep.
Narine had proven to be the game-changer in the match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side in the Eliminator and had struck a match winning 15-ball 26. It was Jadeja the fielder, who once again came to CSK’s rescue in the final!

IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja to lead CSK after MS Dhoni decides to step down
Franchise confirms that Dhoni will continue to represent them “this season and beyond”
Ravindra Jadeja will lead Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL 2022, after MS Dhoni, who has led the team since the first season of the tournament, in 2008 – bar the two years when the team was banned – announced his decision to step down from the leadership position. In a statement, the franchise said that “Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond”.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said that Dhoni wanted the leadership “transition to be smooth” and felt Jadeja was ready to take up the mantle for the team, which won its fourth IPL title last year. Viswanathan said that Dhoni had announced the decision on Thursday at the team meeting before the squad left for training – the defending champions will play the tournament opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
“MS Dhoni was thinking about it,” Viswanathan said. “He felt it is the right time to hand over captaincy to Jaddu [Jadeja]. He feels Jaddu is also in prime form of his career and it is the ideal time for him lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise must be [in the] back of his mind.”
Jadeja, who has been with the franchise since 2012, will become the third player to lead the Super Kings side, after Dhoni and Suresh Raina.
Speaking to the Super Kings’ social media team, Jadeja said, “Feeling good. At the same time, I also need to fill in big boots like Mahi bhai, [he] has already set the big legacy so I need to carry [that] forward. I don’t need to worry too much because he is here so whatever I have a question to ask, I’ll definitely go to him. He’ll be my go-to person. He was and still he is today, so I’m not worried too much.”
Viswanathan said that while Dhoni had not personally informed him of his decision in advance, it was not a surprise to the franchise, and they had discussed the subject – the succession plan – even before the 2021 IPL and had alerted Jadeja at the time. “He [Jadeja] has been talked to earlier. Even last year, there was a proposal. We knew he would be the best person to succeed MS.”
For the past two IPL seasons, there had been speculation around Dhoni’s future. Last November, at a function organised by Super Kings in Chennai, Dhoni had assured his fans that he would continue playing for the franchise for at least one more season.
Viswanathan reckoned that Dhoni was waiting for the opportune time, just as he had when handing over the reins of the Indian team to Virat Kohli. “It is similar to when he handed Virat the captaincy after having groomed him for a few years at international level. Similarly, he wanted the transition to be smooth.”
Viswanathan added that the franchise had immense confidence in Jadeja’s leadership. “Jaddu has the potential to do well for the franchise,” he said. “[He is a] good all-round cricketer, playing his best, he can get the team around. And MS’ guidance will always be there. This will be a good induction programme.”
Recognised as one of India’s great all-format captains, Dhoni’s leadership legacy at Super Kings is similarly phenomenal. After he led India to the title at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, former Tamil Nadu captain, the late VB Chandrasekhar, had told Super Kings owner N Srinivasan about Dhoni’s worth as a leader. Srinivasan had then asked Chandrasekhar, who was at the Super Kings table at the inaugural IPL auction, to acquire Dhoni at any cost.
Dhoni has, over the years, repaid that faith with interest. In the 213 matches in which he led Super Kings – in the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League T20 – there were 130 wins, 81 losses, and, crucially, six titles: four at the IPL and two at the CLT20.
Jadeja – new to captaincy, but no lack of leadership experience
As for Jadeja, he is totally inexperienced as a captain. Jadeja, 34, has never led a team at the senior level; he was the captain of an India Under-19 team in 2007.
But Jadeja is recognised now as one of the finest all-format allrounders. In terms of fielding, there are few better than him in international cricket, but it his desire to keep improving that has become his biggest strength. Recently, Jadeja climbed to the No. 1 spot for allrounders in the ICC Test rankings after his match-winning performance in the Mohali Test against Sri Lanka, where he scored 175 and then returned a nine-wicket match haul. Jadeja is also in the top ten among ODI allrounders, and is also a crucial member of the T20I side.
In the last two years at Super Kings, Jadeja has been the key finisher with the bat, a role that Dhoni had played for a long time. Between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Jadeja scored 459 runs at an average of 57.37 and a robust strike rate of 157.73. That included two half-centuries, the only times Jadeja has reached the landmark in a career of more than 270 matches. During this period, he also bagged 19 wickets in 30 matches at an economy of 7.78.
While he might not have clocked enough captaincy hours, Jadeja has immense experience playing alongside Dhoni at Super Kings – 131 matches, since joining the team in 2012. And that, Viswanathan said that Dhoni felt, made Jadeja the best successor for him, considering he has the heft as a player, as a leader, as an allrounder, and as a matchwinner.
